THE HEART OF BOYNTON VILLAGE APARTMENTS PROJECT IS UNDERWAY!

It’s a gamechanger. That is the best way to sum up the groundbreaking of the first redevelopment project in over 50 years on the historic East Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard corridor. On Friday, March 4th, the BBCRA along with the developer, Centennial Management Corp., celebrated the significant event with City officials and community members. The mixed-use project known as The Heart of Boynton Village Apartments will feature 124 multi-family affordable rental units as well as over 8,000 square feet of commercial space.

During the groundbreaking event, long-term residents reflected on the once vibrant corridor when Club Continental and Bahama Bob provided a place for the community to celebrate their culture and heritage. When both venues closed their doors, the corridor quickly lost its commercial hub that was once brought to life with musical performances by renowned artists like James Brown, B.B. King, and Guitar Slim.

For 50 years, community members and City leaders advocated and pushed for new redevelopment along E. MLK Jr. Boulevard. Finally, after many failed attempts to bring commercial activity back to the corridor, the Heart of Boynton Village Apartments groundbreaking has been recognized as many as a victory for the community. Former City Commissioner Mack McCray spoke during the event, saying “Today, March the 4th, we have strength. We have a project that we can be proud of. When I hold this shovel today, I will not be holding the shovel for myself, I will be holding the shovel for those that have fought before me.”

This project was made possible through the collaboration of a public-private partnership. Centennial Management Corp. was awarded funding from the Florida Housing Finance Corporation’s 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credit Funding Program and the BBCRA has budgeted approximately $4.7 million in funding to assist with the completion of the project and leasing of the commercial space.

It is anticipated The Heart of Boynton Village Apartments will be completed in Spring 2023. The project is currently leasing the commercial units of the mixed-use project and seeking tenants for restaurants, bakeries, professional/medical office space, retail, and hair/nail salons.
